Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) - Quick Guidelines

Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) examination is conducted by National Board of Examination (NBE). It is a test that is mandatory for students who have pursued MBBS in abroad and wants to practice in India. The following are some guidelines of this examination:

• As per Section 13(4A) of IMC Act, 1956 it is a statutory requirement that for practicing in India students who have pursued MBBS course from outside India is required to be registered with State Medical Council (SMC). SMC will provide registration only when they will clear FMGE examination. It was amended in the year 2002.

• Student who wants to appear for FMGE must obtain Eligibility Certificate (EC). Eligibility Certificate is issued by Medical Council of India (MCI) at the time when student takes admission in the foreign medical college or university. Every student who will pursue MBBS degree in the foreign country must have obtained Eligibility Certificate according to Section 13(4B) of IMC Act, 1956.

• As per the direction of Supreme Court of India, students taking admission in medical courses in foreign country after 16-04-2010 must complete the course from the same institute.

• The candidates should provide documentary evidence before the cut of date to show the proof that they have passed the final MBBS examination in the foreign institution. After the cut off date the application for FMGE will be rejected.

• The screening test will be conducted twice in a year in June and December.

• It will be computerised based test. There will be three test papers of Multiple Choice Questions in Pre-Clinical, Para-Clinical and Clinical Medicine and its allied subjects including Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

• The medium of instruction for the examination is English.

• The duration of examination for each paper will be 3 hours.

• To pass this examination, students need to obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each paper separately.

• Students will be given three chances to pass this examination. In case student does not pass in the third chance they will not be allowed to sit for the examination any more.

• After passing the examination the successful candidate should apply for provisional or permanent registration to the Secretary, Medical Council of India, New Delhi or to any State Council of India along with the requisite registration fee. MCI or SMC will issue provisional certificate to the candidates who needs to undergo one year internship in an approved institution. Students who have already undergone one year internship are eligible to get permanent registration.
