History

In 1944, the Soviet soldiers occupied Romania and till 1989 Romania was under the rule of communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu. In 1989 Nicolae Ceausescu was overthrown and in 1990 free election was held in Romania for the first time. In 1990 the political party National Salvation Front (FSN) won the election and Ion Iliescu was elected as the president of Romania. In 2004, Romania first joined North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and become a member of European Union (EU).
