History

Neanderthals inhabited the territory of Ukraine for about 44000 years. In early 19th century in the wake of peasant revolt Ukraine emerged as a concept of a nation. In 1919, Ukraine was merged from Ukrainian People's Republic and West Ukrainian People's Republic and was included in the Soviet Union. Ukraine became an independent state with the dissolution of Soviet Union on August 24, 1991. From then Ukraine no longer followed the laws of USSR but it started to follow only the laws of Ukraine SSR. The voters of Ukraine approved a referendum in 1991 that formalizes independence from the Soviet Union. 90% of the citizen of Ukraine voted for independence. Leonid Kravchuk became the first president of Ukraine who rules the country from 1991 to 1994. Ukraine adopted its own constitution on 28th June, 1996. Petro Poroshenko is the fifth and present president of Ukraine.
